Whether it’s a password or a hidden code, there is a special thrill in sharing a "secret" language with others. Learning American Sign Language (ASL) is fun for young children and makes them aware that there are different ways of communicating to others. It can strengthen memory, literacy, numeracy, visual, and motor/spatial skills and is the fourth most common language after English, Spanish, and Italian.

Sign Language at The Burlington Academy is taught to children in our Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Kindergarten Enrichment classes. Children partake in one class per month with our certified Sign Language Teacher and then reinforce signs during the month with classroom teachers and peers. The children become quickly engaged.

The children learn the alphabet and numerals from one to twenty. They enjoy and use signs to communicate about emotions, family, verbs/actions, opposites, calendar, animals, and colors. Signs are learned best by repeated, natural use and practice.

After each sign language class, children are given reference sheets having pictorial depictions of signs and finger spelling. These sheets offer parents and children the opportunity to share, practice and use these signs in natural conversational language. Facility with Sign Language can only be acquired through use.
