The Burlington Academy of Learning’s Kindergarten Enrichment Program is designed to complement a child’s half day Kindergarten experience in the public school setting and build a solid academic foundation, develop positive feelings toward learning, and encourage self esteem.

The Academy’s program:
  • Boosts reading and writing skills with individualized tutoring from certified teachers
  • Offers hands on science experiences and real life math skills;
  • Encourages individual creativity by exposing children to different artists and allowing them to make unique creations in many different media; and
  • Provides outdoor free play which is no longer provided in many public school Kindergarten Programs but crucial in a child’s physical and social development
Also included in the program:
  • Spanish - Learning a second language is fun and teaches an appreciation for another culture.
  • Sign Language - Students learn the Language of Sign, which improves fine motor skills and encourages children to develop compassion for others.
  • Woodworking - Covers the basics of woodworking including types of materials and tools, safety, and more. Students use math skills by measuring and designing. Fine motor skills and coordination are refined with the use of small tools as well as with nailing, sawing and gluing. Finishing processes such as staining, painting and decorating are part of the fun.
Certified teachers instruct children in the proper formation of upper and lower case manuscript letters, word spacing, and legibility. Children learn to express themselves through dictation or in written form using inventive spelling. Small group discussions help each child formalize and verbalize their own thoughts, expand their thinking, develop imagery, and promote oral problem solving.

Character development is a key component of the curriculum as the children focus on a different concept each month. The children have the opportunity to develop social skills such as cooperating, helping, negotiating, compromise, respecting other’s rights and feelings.

Children enrolled in Kindergarten Enrichment at The Academy learn from self-directed problem solving and experimentation. Their environment is filled with hands-on experiences and opportunities for active exploration, allowing for investigation and creativity. Different levels of ability, development, and learning styles are expected, appreciated, and taken into consideration when designing activities.

The Academy’s goal is to lay the foundation for a lifelong interest in, and the enjoyment of, the learning process, and especially reading. Most importantly, our goal is to build each child’s confidence, autonomy, and sense of self.
