SIGN LANGUAGE

Curriculum Overview

 

September/October:

  • Introduction to sign language as another form of communication that is used by the deaf
  • Prologue of what will be taught over the course of the year.
  • Introduction of alphabet; practice letters A-D.
  • Introduction of Numerals: practice numbers 1-5.
  •  New word; “I”, “me”, “am”.

 

November:

  • Introduction of alphabet; practice letters E-H
  • Introduction of Numerals; practice numbers 5-10.
  • Introduction of the expression of emotions.
  • New words;  “my” and “your” as well as some holiday vocabulary. 
  • Signing and interpreting “Try Outs”
  • Review letters A-D, numerals 1-5, words covered up to this month

 

December:

  • Introduction of letters I-L.
  • Introduction of numbers 11-15.
  • New words; “it”, “is” and “like”.
  • Signing and interpreting “Try Outs”
  • Review letters A-H numerals 1-10, words, Holiday Vocabulary, and emotions.

 

January:

  • Introduction of letters M-P.
  • Introduction of numbers 16-20.
  • Introduction of signs for people in the family. Signing and interpreting “Try Outs”
  • Signing and interpreting “Try Outs”
  • Review letters A-K, numerals 1-15, word, and emotions.

 

February:

  • Introduction of letters Q-T.
  • New words; “are”, “love”, “and”, “other”.
  • Learn rhyme – “One, Two, Buckle My Shoe” and Valentine’s Day signs.
  • Signing and interpreting “Try Outs”
  • Review letters A-P, numerals 1-20, words, family words and emotions.

 

March:

  • Introduction of letters U-X.
  • Introduction of action words and rhyme “Rain, Rain, Go Away” and “Caterpillar Dreams”.
  • Signing and interpreting “Try Outs”
  • Review letters A-T, numerals 1-20, words, family words, emotions, and action words.

 

April:

  • Introduction of letters Y-Z.
  • Introduction of signs for color words and the song “Make New Friends”.
  • New Words; “make”, “but”, “new” and “keep”.
  • Signing and interpreting “Try Outs”
  • Review letters A-Z, numerals 1-20, words, family words, emotions, action words and color words.

 

May:

  • Review of letters A-Z, numerals 1-20, emotions, family words, action words, simple pronouns, holidays, days of the week and colors, and graduation songs.

 

June:

  • Practice our special songs we “sign” at Graduation!
