HEALTH AND WELLNESS POLICY
If your child becomes ill while at school, you will be notified (or those you have authorized) to pick up your child. He/She will stay in the care of a teacher, away from other children, in a quiet location until you arrive. The Burlington Academy of Learning is not equipped to care for sick children. If your child is recovering from an illness and is on medication that needs to be administered while your child is at school, you will need to sign a release form, which also must be signed by your child’s doctor, in order for us to administer the medication. These forms are available at all parent bulletin boards, forms bins around school, in the Main Office or on School Speak in the “Parent Form” section on the Home Page.
Please call, fax, or email the Main Office as soon as possible if your child will not be attending school on a certain day. Please give us the reason for your child’s absence with specific symptoms. Please include whether your child has a fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea or conjunctivitis, etc… in your message. If your child has been seen by a health care provider and has been diagnosed with the flu or another illness, please indicate this information in your phone message as well.
If your child has any of the following symptoms, your child must stay at home:
-Thick nasal discharge
-Vomiting within the last 24 hours
-Diarrhea within the last 24 hours
-Conjunctivitis that has not received 24 hours of treatment
-Has a contagious disease
Keeping sick students at home means that they keep their viruses to themselves rather than sharing them with others. If your child has had a fever, children may not return to school for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone, without the use of fever reducing medicine. A child may return to school once they are free of all symptoms for 24 hours.
For the continued health and safety of all our children and teachers, and the minimization of the spreading of disease and illness, it is critical all parents strictly adhere to our school guidelines for not attending school when a child is ill or may becoming ill. We thank you for your support and respect of these policies.
Hand Washing Policy
At The Burlington Academy of Learning, we have a very strict hand washing policy for the safety and health of everyone. We require our children and all staff (including Parent Helpers) to wash hands with warm soapy water at the following times:
- Upon arrival to their classroom
- Before snack
- Before lunch
- After any sneezing or coughing
- After bathroom usage
- After touching their eyes, nose and/or mouth
- Whenever else the teachers deem necessary
We teach children a hand washing song to insure they wash thoroughly and long enough.
This is sung to “Frere Jacques”:
Tops and bottoms, Tops and bottoms.
In between, in between.
Round and round the circle.
Don’t forget the thumbs!
Now we’re clean. Now we’re clean!
